Preparing a Shopify store for a sale weekend: the setup checklist

Sale weekends break stores in predictable places: discounts, inventory, shipping promises, and support capacity. A setup checklist to run the week before, not the night before.

Test the offer like a customer, early

Create the sale discounts at the start of the week and test each one in a real checkout: the code works, the automatic discount triggers on the right products, stacking behaves the way your ads promise, and the sale price displays consistently on product pages, collections, and the cart. Most sale disasters are a discount behaving exactly as configured, which nobody had checked.

Check the sale against your other machinery too: free shipping thresholds, gift card handling, and any bundle or upsell apps. Promotions interact, and the week before the sale is when you want to meet those interactions, not during the Saturday rush with a queue forming.

Inventory and fulfillment honesty

Confirm stock levels on the products the sale will push, and decide in advance what happens when they run out: does the listing show sold out cleanly, does the sale price stop, and are staff answering from the same facts. Overselling a hero product converts a good weekend into a week of apology emails.

Align shipping promises with reality. If the sale will double packing time, say so on the site before the orders land, in the banner, the shipping page, and the confirmation flow where settings allow. Customers forgive a stated delay far more readily than a silent one discovered by refreshing a tracking page.

Load, links, and the pages that will spike

Walk the exact paths your campaigns will send traffic to, on a phone, from the ad or email link to checkout. Landing pages built for the sale deserve the same proofread as the homepage, and timed banners should be checked for start and end behavior in your timezone, not the platform’s.

Make sure analytics and inventory alerts are actually on, and that someone is named to watch them during the event. A sale weekend with no owner for the dashboard is a store flying on hope, and hope is not a monitoring strategy.

Support and the morning after

Draft the answers before the questions arrive: sale terms, code problems, shipping timing, returns on sale items, and the escalation route for a genuine outage. Brief whoever covers the weekend with the discount details in writing, because most sale tickets are simple questions asked at volume.

Schedule the teardown too: when discounts end, banners come down, and prices revert, and who verifies it. Stores embarrass themselves less often launching sales than forgetting to end them, and a checklist with an owner and a time beats a good memory every season.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I set up a sale?

Discounts and landing pages should exist and be tested several days ahead, with a final end to end checkout test the day before. Same day setup is how untested stacking rules and wrong dates reach customers. The sale itself can be short. Its preparation should not be.

Should sale discounts auto apply or use a code?

Automatic discounts reduce friction and code failures, while codes give you tracking and a sense of occasion for email and social campaigns. Many stores use automatic for the site wide offer and codes for partner or segment offers. Either way, test the exact combination your marketing will create.

What is the most common sale weekend failure?

A discount configuration surprise: a code that will not stack with the advertised automatic offer, a sale price missing from a collection the ad links to, or a discount that ended early on timezone settings. All three are found by one real test purchase, which is why testing tops this checklist.

How do I handle shipping delays during a big sale?

State the extended handling time before purchase, in the banner and shipping information, and repeat it in post purchase messaging where you can. Then staff to the promise you made. Customers accept stated delays remarkably well. What they do not accept is discovering the delay by chasing an unshipped order.
