Shopify Tax Setup: A Plain Checklist for New Stores
Tax setup is registration, settings, and product flags in the right order. A plain checklist that gets a new store collecting correctly.
First, know where you owe
Tax obligations follow nexus: the places where your business has a taxable presence through location, staff, inventory, or sales volume thresholds. A home office state is the obvious one; warehouses, third party fulfillment storage, and high sales into a state can create others. This checklist organizes setup, but the determination of where you owe belongs to your accountant or a tax service.
Register for a tax permit in each state or region where you will collect before you start collecting there. Collecting tax without registration, or in a place where you have no obligation, creates its own problems. The admin settings come after the legal groundwork, not before.
Configure the admin in order
In the tax settings, add each region where you are registered, confirm your business address and tax IDs are correct, and review the default rates Shopify maintains for those regions. Platform maintained rates handle most standard cases; unusual local rules are where a review earns its fee.
Decide whether your prices include tax or have it added at checkout, and be consistent with your market's expectations. US shoppers expect tax added; many international markets expect it included. Mixing the two presentations across markets confuses shoppers and bookkeeping alike.
Flag products correctly
Most physical goods follow standard rules, but categories such as clothing, groceries, and digital products are treated differently in many places, and some items are exempt entirely in some regions. Set product level tax overrides or exemptions where your catalog needs them instead of assuming the default fits everything you sell.
Services, gift cards, and shipping charges each have their own treatment in many jurisdictions. Gift cards in particular are commonly taxed at redemption rather than purchase. Confirm these three explicitly; they are where new store setups most often drift from the rules.
Verify with test orders and keep records
Place test orders to addresses in each region you collect in and confirm the calculated tax matches expectations before launch traffic arrives. Screenshot the results into your setup records. A five minute test catches the wrong rate, the missing region, and the accidental store wide exemption while they are still free to fix.
Keep registrations, settings exports, and filing receipts organized from day one, and set a calendar for filing deadlines per region. Tax setup is not finished at configuration; it is finished when the first filing cycle completes cleanly, and stores that treat it as a system sail through that cycle.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify automatically know where I need to collect tax?
Shopify provides tools and insights that flag where your sales may be creating obligations, but the legal determination and registration are the merchant's responsibility. Treat platform notices as prompts to verify with a professional, not as the decision itself.
Should my prices include tax?
It depends on market norms. US stores typically add tax at checkout; many European and other markets expect tax included pricing. Choose per market and stay consistent so shoppers and your books see one clear pattern.
How are gift cards taxed?
In many jurisdictions a gift card is not taxed when purchased; the tax applies when it is redeemed for taxable goods. Confirm the rule for your regions, because it is a common setup mistake.
When should I get professional tax help?
At setup if you sell into multiple regions, use third party fulfillment, or sell categories with special treatment. The cost of one consultation is small next to back tax exposure discovered years later.
