Plain answers for setting up a Shopify store

How to Add Products to Shopify the Right Way

Add products in the Shopify admin under Products then Add product: enter a title, description, media, price, SKU, inventory, weight, and shipping details, then organize with collections and tags. Products added with complete data convert better and are easier to manage than quick drafts filled in later.

The fields that matter

Title should be the name a customer would search, not internal jargon. Description answers the questions a buyer actually has: size, material, fit, care, and what is included. Media means at least three photos: the product alone, in context, and a detail shot. Price needs a compare-at price only when a discount is real.

Variants, SKU, and inventory

Use variants for size, color, or material instead of duplicate products. Give each variant its own SKU and barcode if you plan to use a point of sale or fulfillment service later. Turn on inventory tracking even with rough counts; overselling a product you cannot restock quickly is a painful first mistake.

Organization that scales

Collections group products for browsing: build them with automated rules on tags so new products file themselves. Tags are for filtering and automation, not for customers, so name them systematically. A clean structure now saves a full rebuild when the catalog passes fifty products.

SEO basics per product

Edit the search engine listing preview at the bottom of the product page. The page title should stay under sixty characters and the description should read like an answer, not keyword stuffing. Shopify auto-generates structured data for products, so your job is accurate content rather than technical markup.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bulk import products?
Yes, with a CSV under Products then Import. Export a sample product first to get the exact column format, and import a small test batch before the full catalog.
How many products should a new store launch with?
Enough to make the store feel intentional, usually five to twenty. One strong product beats a hundred thin listings.
Should product descriptions be long?
Long enough to answer real questions. For most products that is 100 to 300 words plus specs.
