Plain answers for setting up a Shopify store

How to Set Up a Shopify Store Step by Step

Setting up a Shopify store takes five core steps: create your account, add products, choose and customize a theme, configure payments and shipping, then connect a domain and launch. Most first stores can go from signup to live in a single day if the product photos and descriptions are ready.

Start the account and pick a plan

Sign up at shopify.com with your email and a store name. The store name you enter creates your myshopify.com URL, and you can change the display name later but not the myshopify subdomain, so pick something clean. After the trial you need a paid plan; Basic covers almost every new store. Skip the annual discount until you know the store works.

Add products before touching design

Products are the skeleton of the store. In the admin, go to Products, then Add product. Each product needs a title, a plain description, at least one photo, a price, and inventory tracking if you hold stock. Set up collections (manual or automated by tag) so the catalog has structure before you start moving sections around on the homepage.

Configure payments, shipping, and taxes

Activate Shopify Payments if it is available in your country; it removes third party transaction fees and gives you Shop Pay. Under Settings then Shipping and delivery, create zones and rates that match what shipping actually costs you. Taxes are mostly automatic for US stores, but confirm your state registrations under Settings then Taxes and duties.

Connect a domain and launch

Buy a domain through Shopify or connect one from Namecheap or another registrar by pointing the A record to Shopify and the CNAME to shops.myshopify.com. Remove the password page under Online Store then Preferences only when you are ready for strangers to see the site. Place a real test order with a small charge and refund it before you tell anyone the store is open.
