Setting up automatic discounts and sale pricing in Shopify

Percentage off, buy X get Y, and scheduled sale prices can all run without codes if you set them up right. How automatic discounts work, their limits, and how to test a sale before it goes live.

Codes versus automatic discounts

A discount code asks the customer to do work: find it, remember it, type it correctly at checkout. An automatic discount applies itself when the cart qualifies, no code, no friction, which is why it converts better for sitewide sales and threshold offers. The platform supports percentage and fixed amount reductions, buy X get Y structures, and free shipping offers in automatic form.

The limitation to plan around: only one automatic discount applies to a cart at a time unless you deliberately combine compatible offers in settings, and codes interact with automatic discounts according to the combination rules you set. Knowing your store's combination policy before a big sale prevents the two classic disasters, stacking you never intended and a sale that will not apply.

Setting up a percentage sale

Create the discount, choose automatic, and set the percentage and what it covers: the whole order, specific collections, or specific products. Collection based scoping is the tidy way to run category sales without touching product prices. Set the active dates to match your campaign, including the timezone reality that your sale ends when the platform clock says so, not when your evening ends.

Decide the combinations deliberately. Can this sale stack with your welcome code? With free shipping? Write the intended answers down, set them in the combination options, and then test each combination as a customer would, because the settings are easy to misread and expensive to discover live.

Sale pricing versus discounts

Editing a product's price and compare at price creates the struck through sale look on product pages, which automatic discounts alone do not produce, since the discount only appears in the cart. Many sales need both: adjusted prices for the visual signal on the site, or a discount for the mechanics, chosen by where you want the shopper to feel the saving.

Bulk price edits for a sale are safer with a spreadsheet export and reimport, or a scheduling app, than by hand at midnight. However you do it, keep the original prices saved so the sale ends cleanly. Stores have run accidental permanent sales before, and the margin notices before anyone does.

Test like a customer, then launch

Place test orders covering the main cases: a qualifying cart, a cart just below threshold, a mixed cart with excluded products, and a cart with a code added. Confirm the totals by hand. Check that the sale shows correctly on product pages, collection pages, and the cart, because a discount that exists but is invisible underperforms.

After launch, watch the discount's usage report during the first hours. Zero uses on a busy morning means something is broken, not that customers are shy. A five minute check early is the difference between a fixed setting and a lost sale day.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers combine an automatic discount with a code?

Only if you allow it in the discount's combination settings. You control whether an automatic offer combines with product discounts, order discounts, and shipping discounts separately. Set this deliberately per campaign; the default assumptions sellers make about stacking are wrong often enough to cost real money.

Why is my automatic discount not applying?

Check in order: is it active and within its dates, does the cart actually meet the conditions, is another automatic discount already applying and blocking it, and are the products in the collections you scoped? The one automatic discount at a time rule is the most common culprit after simple date mistakes.

Do automatic discounts show the sale price on product pages?

No. They reduce the price in the cart and checkout. If you want struck through compare at pricing on product and collection pages, edit the product prices themselves or use an app that manages scheduled price changes. Many stores pair both approaches for big sales.

Can I schedule a sale to start and end automatically?

The discount itself takes start and end dates, so the mechanics switch on and off by themselves. The surrounding work, banners, emails, and any manual price edits, needs its own scheduling or a reminder. Set a calendar check for the morning after the sale ends to confirm prices and banners are back to normal.
