Shopify Metafields: The Custom Product Data Setup That Replaces Three Apps
The product page that lists care instructions, materials, and a size guide without an app is using metafields. A metafield is a custom data field attached to a product, a collection, or a page, and it is the way Shopify stores custom information without paying for an app to hold it.
The apps that sell this feature are selling a form. The field itself is already in Shopify, free, and the setup takes an afternoon. The stores that pay for it are usually the ones that never opened the Custom data settings page.
What a metafield actually is
A metafield is a definition plus a value. The definition says what the field is: its name, its type, and where it lives. The types cover the common cases: single-line text, multi-line text, numbers, dates, files, and references to other products. The definition is created in Settings, under Custom data, and the value is filled in on each product.
Once the definition exists, the value shows up on the product page in the admin, next to the standard fields. Fill it in per product, and connect it in the theme editor through dynamic sources, which is how the value reaches the storefront. No code is needed for the common cases, and the theme editor shows the connection as a menu choice, not a code edit.
The three uses that replace apps
Care instructions and materials on product pages are the first. A field for fabric composition, a field for wash instructions, and the product page shows them for every product that has them, without copying text into each description. Size guides and fit notes are the second: a field per product, shown in the right place, instead of a PDF linked from the description.
Ingredient or origin lists are the third, for stores that need them: a field for ingredients, a field for country of origin, filled in once per product and shown on the page. Each one is a field, not a page, which means it shows in the right place on every product without anyone copying text.
The setup order
Define the field first, with the right type, then fill it on a few products, then connect it in the theme editor. The mistake is filling in values before the definition exists, or picking the wrong type and having to redo it: a number field cannot hold text, and a text field cannot be used for a date range. Pick the type from the data, not from the habit, and test the connection on one product before filling in fifty.

Frequently asked questions
What are Shopify metafields?
Custom data fields attached to products, collections, pages, and other objects. A metafield holds information the standard fields do not, like care instructions or materials, and the theme editor can display it on the storefront.
Do I need an app for metafields?
No. Metafields are built into Shopify, in Settings under Custom data. Apps add bulk editing and nicer interfaces, but the fields themselves, and the theme connection, work without one.
What is the difference between metafields and metaobjects?
A metafield is a single field on an object, like a care instruction on a product. A metaobject is a reusable entry, like a size guide, that many products can reference. Use metafields for data that belongs to one product, and metaobjects for data shared across many.
How do I show metafields on my product page?
Connect them in the theme editor through dynamic sources. Open the product template, select the section or block, and choose the metafield from the dynamic source menu. No code is needed for the standard cases.
